Overview

(Want to) Protest? is a whole day of workshops, films and talks aimed at sharing our collective experiences of social power structures and inequalities, starting a conversation about what can be done about it, and most importantly what YOU want to do about it.

Inspired by our production of Protest, the event has been co-designed by a group of young social activists from our Young Company, working alongside Northern Stage staff. Young Company is for anyone aged 14 – 21 who would like to explore their creativity, use their voice to influence others, make new friends, discover who they are and who they can be.

Join us for some or all of the day, it’s FREE to take part. Food and refreshments will be provided.

(Want to) Protest? is open to all ages. Please note anyone aged 11 or under must be accompanied by an adult.

For attendees who would like to watch the matinee performance of Protest, a £5 ticket offer is available. Simply pop over to box office on the day to buy your ticket.

The Big Listen Workshop

 

Tyne & Wear Citizens will run a workshop on the 5 steps to social change used in a community organising approach.

Want to change the world, but don’t know where to start? Community organising is an approach to social change that has been used successfully for over 100 years! Martin Luther King Jnr, Rosa Parks and Barrack Obama were all trained in community organising methods. We will share this approach in our workshop. We will also do some listening, asking what are the issues impacting you, that you would like to change. Come share your views. As all good campaigns start with listening!

Theatre of the Oppressed through Image Theatre

 

This brief snapshot of Theatre of the Oppressed practice will swiftly move from some accessible games and exercises which help build tools for socially engaged theatre making, to creating images which are the foundations of Forum Theatre scenes. Forum Theatre engages audiences in a dynamic and physical dialogue with the crisis and predicaments presented by the play.  It is a way of collectivising experiences of oppression, disrupting power structures and daring to imagine and practice what change looks like.

A music workshop exploring rhythm through improvisation, movement, vocal chants, and body percussion. This session will provide participants with the opportunity to learn new rhythms, hone listening skills, and practice new ways of communicating through movement and sound.

A panel discussion focusing on how artists create tools to help people learn about social issues, by making the issues visible, challenging the status quo, creating a vision of change, and influencing action
