Arts Award at Northern Stage

Arts Award is a range of unique qualifications that supports anyone aged up to grow as artists and arts leaders, inspiring them to connect with and take part in the wider arts world through taking challenges in an art form and it is offered at five different levels (from Discover to Gold).

To achieve their Arts Award, young people take on challenges in an art form, participate in arts activities, experience arts events, get inspired by artists and share their arts skills with others. Young people create a portfolio to keep a record of their creative journey. Along the way they are supported by an Arts Award adviser, acting as assessor, facilitator and mentor.

Arts Award is a great way to encourage pupils to think creatively and explore various art forms. Here at Northern Stage we are committed to embedding the Arts Award into our participatory programme, both within the building and in schools and community settings.

In our new participation space Play Space we are able to run regular programmes for schools and community groups inside the theatre. Discover level is a great introduction to Arts Award and is easy to achieve.

Discover in a Day

Northern Stage prides itself on creating exciting and dynamic theatre in the centre of Newcastle. Our Discover in a Day programme for primary school children will give them the opportunity to explore the theatre through a guided tour, meet staff from various departments (costume, technical etc.) and get a real sense of the work we create here. Pupils would then work with a director in our new Play Space to create their own play in a day (with access to props and costumes of course!)

Before their arrival at the theatre students will be given a simple logbook in which they will be required to detail their experiences throughout the day (through writing, illustrations or even photographs) and upon completion of the day's work all students will be awarded an official Arts Award Certificate.
