Northern Stage has today adopted the Royal Court’s proposed Code of Behaviour for preventing sexual harassment and abuses of power.

The Code of Behaviour was drawn up following a Day of Action at the Royal Court.  At the event, which was attended by Executive Director Kate Denby, 150 accounts were read out on stage, and four town hall workshops were held on defining, exploring and challenging sexual harassment across the theatre industry.

At Northern Stage we welcome this suggested code of behaviour and will be adopting the principles company-wide alongside delivering training to all our staff. We will also work with colleagues across the region in the independent sector to develop processes that can best support those working outside the more formal structures of a theatre venue.

The adoption of this Code of Behaviour follows Northern Stage’s previous support for the Joint Statement from the Theatre Industry on sexual harassment and the abuse of power, issued on 23 October 2017.

There is no room for sexual harassment or abuse of power in the theatre.  Everyone deserves to enjoy a happy, healthy and safe working environment.
