The seemingly enjoyable afternoon and evening as Lady Hunstanton entertains her guests takes on a series of unforeseen incidents and consequences, as the relationships between Gerald Arbuthnot, Hester Worsley (the American heiress), Lord Illingworth and Mrs Arbuthnot unfold, resulting in an unexpected turn of events leading to a dramatic ending.
