Dear North East Artists,

I’ve made no secret of the fact that this is my dream job. But not because of the job title, or the multiple spaces I get to curate or the private office (which is cold and has no natural light by the way).  But because I long – and have always longed - to work in the community: in partnership with my staff team at Northern Stage, in collaboration with the artistic community in the North East and in deep relationship with the people and places across Tyne and Wear and beyond. And then, a pandemic. How can I work in the community if I don’t know the community?

I started on 2 November and by now, I’d have expected to reach regular status at our bar café, established my favourite table front of house and had the pleasure of buying you a coffee whilst hearing all about you, the work you do, the work you want to make, spent a many a night in the bar after a show pouring over what we do and why we do it. But 2020, said no babes uh-uh, and 2021 is doing its best to keep us from each other.

So, ever a problem solver – and I’m impatient, I’m running So Good to Zoom You sessions. It’s really important to me that I know the widest range of artists in the NE possible. Ultimately, I want to be surprised, I want to be inspired and I want to know and be known. It’s really important that you feel like you have access to me because I see my job as being in service to you, to audiences, and to the North East.

So, how are we going to get to know each other? Throughout March, there will be one 30-minute slot a day (at different times so you can choose what suits your work, caring or sleeping commitments best) available for anyone to book. There’s no agenda, no prep required, and absolutely no pressure. We just jump on Zoom with a cup of our favourite hot stuff and chat the ting, shoot the breeze, chew the fat.

I can’t wait to zoom you.
