Join us for a special director's screening of PROTESTAS, PROPUESTAS Y PROCESOS - a documentary tracing 10 years of social struggles and counter-cultural movements in the Peruvian capital, Lima.

This audiovisual summary retraces the course of various collectives that use music, mural painting, circus, screen printing and photography to form a network of counter-powers - sideline to major media and institutional structures. Faced with police violence, the betrayals of government, and a harsh social reality, Lima's youth has found its voice through counter-culture and autonomy.

Following the film we will have a Q&A with director Pablo Malek - made possible by the generosity of the School of Modern Languages.

Director Pablo Malek is a member of the Colectivo Palante in Paris. He is a researcher and audiovisual communicator specialising in audiovisual memory and social conflicts in Peru. He is the author of several articles spanning topics such as gendered violence in armed conflict in Peru, and documentary films and transitional justice. His book, 'Approaches, Discourse and Memory in the Non-fiction Audiovisual Production on the Internal Armed Conflict in Peru' was launched in Lima in 2017.

English subtitles for the film are a contribution of The Real Translation Project, developed by stage 4 Spanish students at Newcastle University, and lecturer Angela Uribe de Kellett.
