Open Casting Call For The Gap

The Show

The Gap

Book and Lyrics by Victoria Gimby, Music and Lyrics by Stuart Matthew Price Dramaturgy, Direction and Development by Maria Crocker.

The Gap is a time-travelling love letter to the North East, inspired by the felling of the world-famous Sycamore Gap tree. Blending original stories, folklore, history, and imagined futures – from the Romans building Hadrian’s wall to the filming of Kevin Costner’s Robin Hood. It asks why the loss of a single tree felt so profound, and what it reveals about our connection to the past, to the future and to each other.

We are casting for four actor-musicians to take part in two work-in-progress sharings of The Gap, an exciting new musical currently in development.

The Gap is part of Shed Originals, a script development programme supporting new writing. The project is produced by Lowry, supported by Northern Stage, and in partnership with Francesca Moody Productions and is being developed for presentation at Shedinburgh 2026

Casting and how to apply

We are looking for 4 actor-musicians to each play 3 of the 12 characters.

Multi-instrumentalists are desirable, but actors need to be able to play at least one instrument to a high standard. The music style is folk/musical theatre. Guitar, violin, accordion and flute are highly desirable, but we are also looking for people who can play the cajon, viola, ukulele, and other instruments traditionally used in folk music.

Please send a tape with the following:

  • Choose two scenes, and read one character from each. We’d like to see specific accents and character choices
  • Record 30 seconds of each instrument you would be comfortable playing.
  • Sing a folk song of your choosing, whilst accompanying yourself on an instrument.

Please send tapes to Gimbyandprice@gmail.com
