Waygood @ Northern Stage: Urbanscapes by Kit Kingsbury

Urbanscapes by Kit Kingsbury
Waygood @ Northern Stage
Exhibition runs Friday 20 November 2009 – S
aturday 09 January 2010 Reception: 6-8pm Tuesday 24 November 2009

Urbanscapes features a collection of paintings created by emerging British artist Kit Kingsbury including a new series of small-scale works inspired via a recent six-month residency in Japan and funded by the Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation, Great Britain Sasakawa Foundation and Arts Council England.

The paintings attempt to query the viewer’s perception of reality. Based on the Structuralist premise that one’s concept of reality is conjured up from an incomprehensible sum of stimuli, the works employ an array of indistinct and obscure motifs drawn from photographic negatives of urban environments the artist has known and lived. The paintings are oil on board and are for sale £195 - £245 each.

Kit Kingsbury has a studio at Waygood. Waygood is running a series of exhibitions selected by Northern Stage in their sponsors room, while it awaits the completion of its city centre cultural venue. See www.waygood.org for more details.

Kairos, Dee Shaw

9 February – 21 March 2009
Reception: 2-4pm Saturday 28 February 2009

part of the Kairos series, by Dee Shaw

The ancient Greeks had two words for time, chronos, meaning chronological time which is quantative and kairos indicating a moment of undetermined time when something of importance happens. This aspect is qualitative.

“I took these photographs as I walked along Depot Road on the way to my studio at Harker’s Building. Within three days these windows were hidden from view behind sheets of wood. And as we witnessed, they were spectacularly demolished along with the rest of the Parson/Siemens building. The windows in their cracked form, beautifully repaired with industrial silicone were like a gallery of paintings fulfilling the qualitative meaning of time and the upheaval to come.”

In antiquity Kairos was the god of the fleeting moment.

Paintings of magical forests to co-incide with Northern Stage’s Christmas Show, Hansel & Gretel.

“My current practice is an exploration of my desire to create expressive images and an encounter with the white walls of an empty studio. Emptiness is replaced with an imagined nature and an unending path. The wood motif is used to explore the experience of artistic practice and the path is the direction with in it.” – Iain Clark

Paintings by Lynda Dodsworth
26 September – 25 October 2008
Reception: 12-2pm on Saturday 4 October 2008

Lynda’s inspiration comes from visiting the alien landscapes of the Durham coast with its blackened beaches.

This once beautiful coastline has been affected by constant change, both natural and by mankind. For over half a century the coal industry were responsible for the heaps of black spoil, which were tipped over the cliffs and onto the beaches below. When the mines closed some of the industrial waste was removed from the beaches, the remaining spoil heaps were then levelled and the natural action of the sea was expected to continue the cleaning process - to some degree.

“I layer paint, organic matter to create a fusion of chemical concoctions. I do not always know how my noxious substances are going to react, but that is the beauty of it, it all becomes part of my work.” – Lynda Dodsworth
