Q. What are Northern Stage's aims and objectives?

A. Northern Stage has a Mission Statement which exists to offer the North East world class theatrical experiences:

  • We will present and collaborate with the most inventive regional, national and international theatre companies.
  • We will create opportunities for the widest possible audience to participate in the performing arts.
  • We will actively seek new audiences of all ages and from all communities and we will make it easy to visit our theatre.
  • We will work with partners to improve the quality of theatrical learning in the North East.
  • We will always challenge prejudice, snobbery or discrimination.
  • We will encourage originality, artistic courage, intelligent debate, collaboration and participation.

Q. How many people are employed by Northern Stage at any one time?


A. Over 60, but with touring companies coming in and out, the numbers fluctuate regularly.


Q. How many different venues do you have at Northern Stage and what are the maximum seating capacities?


A. We have three performance spaces at Northern Stage. Stage 1 has a seating capacity of 447, Stage 2 160 and Stage 3 80-90, depending on the nature of the event. In addition, Stage 1 and 2 can combine to form one epic space with a seating capacity of up to 600.


Q. What sorts of productions do Northern Stage put on?


A. We aim to provide daring, intelligent and imaginitive theatre which spans all genres. For example, this season you can see modern dance, international drama and family shows, as well as poetry, comedy and a musical.


Q. What is the history of Northern Stage?


A. The theatre was built in 1970 and has been through quite a few changes since then.  Download this document for a brief history of the building and the company.
