“There's a vigour about Northern Stage which suggests a theatre company seriously getting into its stride” CULTURE magazine, April 2008
Northern Stage is the largest producing theatre company in the North East of England, and we are very pleased that we are regarded as one of the top-ten UK producing theatres.
We have built a reputation for visually driven productions that attract new, young audiences, including Our Friends in the North, A Christmas Carol, Ruby Moon, Tattercoats, Son of Man, Thumbelina and The Little Prince. Our creative team are currently hard at work preparing for the Newcastle premier and spring tour of our production of Henrik Ibsen's A Doll's House.
At the start of 2007, we were proud to co-produce Robert Lepage's Lipsynch with Ex Machina and Théâtre San Frontières which lead to the UK's only performance of this incredible new work which is destined to return to these shows in a few years time in the form of a nine hour epic.
Besides producing our own work, we are dedicated to presenting the best in local, national and international theatre. Since we reopened we have hosted the likes of Hoipolloi, Forced Entertainment, Kneehigh, Protein Dance, Twisting Yarn, Ultima Vez, The Opera Group and National Theatre of Scotland. We seek to forge links between these exciting companies and the North East, enabling them to return time and time again to showcase the best that theatre has to offer.
Our Chief Executive, Erica Whyman, is excited about building partnerships with companies and practitioners throughout the UK and beyond. Last Spring, we played to renowned South African writer, actor and director John Kani, with his award winning play Nothing But The Truth. This year you can look forward to a South African retelling of the story of Elektra in Molora, whilst in the year of the Beijing Olympics Yellow Earth Theatre entwine chinese myth and modern life in Running The Silk Road.
